October and November are great months for wholesome activities. People are happier as the weather is getting warmer, many of us want to be active to dust off the winter cobwebs, and it is that gap right before the silly season when you want to be out and about but you don’t want to go too wild.

These two months are also a big time for charity events and initiatives. Here are a few key events that you may want to get involved in.

Tread As One- 22-29 October 2022

The idea is to get as many people as possible into the clubs and onto the treadmills to clock up as many kms as they can. As exercise releases endorphins, which is the feel good hormone, and research shows that people are at less risk of suicide when they connect with others, they aim to get as many people together as a community to tackle the challenge together.

On average around 65, 000 people will attempt to take their lives in Australia each year, which means that there are at least 65, 000 reasons to participate.

Plie in Pink – 21-23 October

For the eleventh year running, Xtend Barre studios across Australia will be hosting their Plié For Pink Barrecamp Fundraiser classes on October 21-23, 2022 to raise much needed funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

Anyone is welcome to attend their local Xtend Barre studio where they will get to enjoy a special 75-minute class, pink dress-up theme, cake stall, raffles and much more with all proceeds donated to NBCF. There will also be a Barrecamp class via live stream on Sunday 23 October at 9.15am so you can play your part in supporting the cause from wherever you are.

Events For Charity

As a predominantly female-based workout, the reality of breast cancer hits close to home for several members, instructors, and their families. In March 2020, one of their very own WA Instructors sadly lost her battle to breast cancer. Breast Cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in Australia. Nine Australians will die every day and 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime. Breast cancer incidence has increased by 33% in the past 10 years alone.

To participate in Plié for Pink this year, book your spot in an in-person class at your local studio www.xtendbarre.com.au/studios or join in online here

Movember

Movember is a really important annual event that promotes men’s health with a focus on prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. Those who can are encouraged to grow a moustache throughout the month to show their support, they can also set themselves a challenge such as running or walking 60km over the month or they can rally a crew and host an event to raise awareness and funds.

According to stats from HCF, men seek out medical help a lot less than women which can be directly linked to poorer overall health across their lifespan. Stats show that men account for 43% of GP visits and they claimed an average of 14 Medicare services while women claims around 19.5.

According to quotes by Dr Bill Stoupas from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, men tend to be less proactive about their health and will often avoid seeing the doctor.

Additionally, skipping regular screens and check ups for the likes of skin cancer, bowel cancer, diabetes and other preventative health scans can mean that important signs are missed until they are further down the line.

Steve Irwin Gala Dinner- 26 November, 2022

Events For Charity You Can Attend This October And November

For those based in Qld or keen to travel The Steve Irwin Gala Dinner is an annual event celebrating the extraordinary life of the world’s most famous Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. It is also a chance to get dressed up.

The night represents the many things Steve was so very passionate about: family, wildlife, conservation and fun. It is also the largest annual fundraising event for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors, the global conservation charity created by Steve and Terri Irwin. Wildlife Warriors strive to protect our wildlife and wild places through the delivery of outstanding outcome-based programs and projects, inclusive of humanity. Their current projects include the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, rhino conservation in Ol Pejeta, tiger conservation in Sumatra, elephant conservation in Cambodia and whale shark research in WA.

The gala is black tie with a touch of khaki and will surely be a night to enjoy https://steveirwingaladinner.org/bne.
